Memphis Bakery Heats Up Sales With A Recipe Of Cause Marketing, Social Media

Helping others could be as easy as eating cake. If two seasoned entrepreneurs have their way, a new venture in online sales of coffee cakes will bring two smiles, not one.

The trick, said Ed Crenshaw and Bill Oates, co-owners of tenderlovingcake.com, is excusing calories with a cause by donating a 35-ounce pound cake to the Mid-South Food Bank for every coffee cake sold.

"This was a way to make work a little more interesting than selling 2,500 cakes a day to people you've never seen," said Crenshaw, who also owns Crenshaw Enterprises, a commercial bakery operation on Summer Avenue. "Let's do something for a little betterment of the world — that's the idea."

Crenshaw and Oates, who owns a graphic design company, became friends while attending Calvary Episcopal Church several years ago. Over the years they discussed various ventures that could utilize Crenshaw's craft and Oates' marketing skills.
