Mardi Gras season means dozens of local bakeries are rolling out the dough for king cakes and with Mardi Gras season kicking off today, bakeries have been making king cakes all day.
The king cake plays a major role in the celebration; each bite is loaded with flavor and history and, depending on the bakery, they may all be shaped like king cakes but the taste may be different.
"We start with a danish pastry," Kenneth Keller of Keller's Bakery said. "We make everything from scratch"
"We do traditional king cakes." Eli Tate of Gambino's Bakery says he uses a "danish dough as our base, we add cinnamon sugar (then) we put a variety of filings from pecans to cream cheese."
