WASHINGTON, D.C. Indiana Senator Dan Coats (R-IN) will be the keynote speaker at the Joint ABA and ATBI Boards of Directors Dinner on June 6, in Washington, D.C.
"Senator Coats is a long-time ally of the baking industry and one of the most highly respected leaders in the U.S. Senate,” said American Bakers Association President & CEO Robb MacKie. “An expert in health care, defense and foreign policy, the ABA and ATBI Boards will be benefit greatly from Senator Coats’ perspective at this critical time for our country.”
Sen. Coats, who serves on the Senate Appropriations; Commerce, Science and Transportation; Joint Economic; and Select Intelligence Committees, will address the Boards on the major issues coming out of Washington, D.C. including healthcare reform, the Farm Bill and the current intelligence and security concerns in Syria, Libya and elsewhere.
Coats has a long and distinguished career in public service to the state of Indiana and to the United States. Following his graduation from Wheaton College, he served in the U.S. Army. Afterwards, Coats received a law degree from Indiana University and joined the office of then-Congressman Dan Quayle. He initially served in the U.S. Congress from 1981 to 1999, first in the House of Representatives and then in the Senate. Coats stepped down from his Senate seat in 1999 to honor his term-limits pledge. He then worked in the private sector until 2001 before serving as U.S. Ambassador to Germany. Following his term as Ambassador, Coats returned to the private sector and also continued his passion for public service as President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and on the boards of many civic, faith-based and volunteer organizations. Senator Coats returned to Congress in January 2011 to focus on cutting wasteful spending, reducing the national debt and promoting pro-growth economic policies.
The 2013 Joint ABA & ATBI Boards of Directors Meeting will be held from June 6-7, 2013, in Washington, D.C. The meetings will feature participation from industry leaders who represent the whole of ABA and ATBI membership as well as discussions on key issues impacting the baking industry.
