Like many other art forms, food has its own trends and cycles.

Whether it’s really small portions of dishes at expensive restaurants or the new food truck craze, things that entice the taste buds change just as often all the other fads.

Desserts are no exception. Growing up, character cakes from the supermarket were all the rage amongst children of the ‘90s. Now, it’s all about super-extravagant cakes. These cakes are towered high and made of fondant, modeling chocolate that looks more like a sculpture that should be in an art museum rather than presented at children’s birthday parties.
