With the first Food Safety Modernization Act regulatory deadline looming, FDA needs to issue its draft guidance documents to assist the food industry. FDA had promised, in the preambles to its foundational rules, that it would release draft guidance documents on the core aspects of the rules, including hazard analysis and preventive controls, and other specific aspects such as environmental monitoring and food allergen control. The guidance documents will be highly instructive and assist a company in assessing its current systems and prepare for the new rules. Without the benefit of this guidance soon, companies run the risk of having to repeat their implementation efforts and delayed compliance.
