WATSONVILLE – Paul Liu was six months old when his father left Taiwan in 1972 in search of a better life for his family.
Ten years went by before the family reunited in Watsonville. In the meantime, Tony Liu adapted the skills he learned making Chinese pastries as a young man in his native land to the tastes of his new home and launched a bakery on Freedom Boulevard.
Nearly four decades later, Paul Liu is running the family business, Freedom Bakery and Confections, in a new location and with a new vision. "Cakes," said 68-year-old Tony Liu, who continues to lend his baking expertise to the enterprise. "Everybody has a birthday. … And you keep quality up so the customers always come back."
