Bimbo Bakeries To Close Nashville's Colonial Bakery On Franklin Pike

Nashville's old Colonial bakery on Franklin Pike will close by the middle of January, its parent company has announced, in an ongoing consolidation of the baking industry.

Bimbo Bakeries USA, a division of the Mexican baking giant that owns Colonial along with Sara Lee, EarthGrains and other brands, will cease operations at its Franklin Pike facility by Jan. 13, it said in a news release. The bakery at 2407 Franklin Pike produces bread and buns and employs 96 people. Production will shift to other Bimbo bakeries.

"This was a difficult decision because of the highly capable team of associates at the Nashville bakery," David Tormena, regional vice president of operations for BBU's Mid-Atlantic region, said in the news release. "However, after an extensive assessment, we concluded that the age of the equipment and building and the outdated level of technology make the bakery unable to compete effectively in the marketplace going forward."
