Quincy, MA – Bay State Milling Company now offers SimplySafe™, a natural heat treatment process, for whole grains and seeds. The technology will increase food safety for manufacturers seeking a validated kill step.
While many manufacturing processes include a step such as baking that reduces microbial pathogens, certain applications like cold-pressed bars, granolas, muesli and snack mixes are void of a kill step. SimplySafe™, which is validated to achieve up to a 5-log reduction in Salmonella, minimizes the risk of food borne illness and costly recalls when applied to ingredients used in these products.
“As FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) shifts the way the industry addresses food safety, we’re extremely fortunate to be able to offer our customers a technology like SimplySafe™,” said Jennifer Robinson, Vice President of Corporate Quality Assurance. “Our proprietary process significantly reduces the risk of potential salmonella contamination, the main pathogen of concern in whole grains and seeds.”
SimplySafe™ can be used to treat whole grains, whole seeds and blends. The technology supports clean label claims while maintaining organic and gluten-free certifications. SimplySafe™ also has no impact on the original ingredient, as it maintains flavor, appearance and functionality.
“The addition of this technology further differentiates Bay State Milling Company’s portfolio of ancient grains and edible seeds,” said David Sachs, Vice President and General Manager of Mini-Milling and Blending. “SimplySafe™ adds considerable value and a higher level of food safety to the high quality ingredients we source from secure supply chains around the world.”
SimplySafe™ heat treatment is currently applied at Bay State Milling Company’s Bolingbrook, Illinois facility with plans to expand the capability to Woodland, CA in early 2018.
