Bakery Hall Honors Nickles Family, Inducts Late Ernest Nickles

NAVARRE —The day before being stricken by a stroke, Ernest Nickles sat down with his grand nephew, Christian Gardner, to talk about the family business.

It was January 1995 and Christian was set to return to Wake Forest University for another semester of college. The young man had been working as a wholesale salesman for Nickles Bakery. Ernest Nickles wanted to know his grand nephew’s impressions.

Why would the 87-year-old patriarch of the family business spend two hours picking the brain of a departing salesman?

“He was still trying to learn more about how to make the bakery better,” said David A. Gardner, Christian’s father and Ernest Nickles’ nephew.
