MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — The exploding popularity of hummus, pita chips and other Middle Eastern staples has helped locally based Amir Foods Inc. and Aladdin's Baking Co. expand their appeal beyond ethnic consumers.
The 19-year-old Amir Foods just moved into a bigger production facility in Mayfield Village that's more than double the size of its old building in South Euclid, and expects the business to keep growing.
"We produce about 200 cases of pita chips daily and around 4,000 (containers) of hummus and salads per day," said Bechara "Butch" Rassi, company president. The company hopes to double its sales by the end of the year.
Amir Foods, whose products are carried by 99 percent of area supermarkets, is in talks to supply two more national food retailers they won't name. They plan to add five more workers to their 15-worker payroll, and possibly even more. The company is owned by the three Rassi brothers.
