The Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Company announced Thursday that it is realigning its flour mill footprint in the U.S. by opening a new high-capacity mill and closing a couple of older mills, including the Salina mill that originally began operations in 1899.
As its new modern mill in Mendota, Ill., nears completion, the company will end production at its flour mill in Salina and its Nokomis flour mill in Minneapolis, Minn., as well as its wheat mill in Chicago, according to a news release from the company.
The age and inefficiency of the older mills is the primary reason they are being shut down, said Chris Cuddy, president of ADM’s Carbohydrate Solutions business, in a statement.
