Purfresh’s active cargo protection technology uniquely controls ripening, enhances food safety, and reduces decay of fresh fruit and vegetables during ocean transport
Purfresh, a leading provider of clean technologies that purify, protect, and preserve the world’s food and water, today announced results of commercial shipments and laboratory studies where Purfresh® Transport was used to protect kiwifruit, citrus, grapes, pumpkins, and avocados. Findings confirm Purfresh Transport maintains product quality, including fruit firmness, color, and taste, and demonstrates the product’s superior ability to control ripening, enhance food safety, and reduce decay of fresh produce shipped around the world.
“To compete effectively in the global food marketplace, produce shippers need to deliver the highest quality produce possible in the most cost-effective way,” said Mr. David Bouchard, general manager, post-harvest and transport solutions for Purfresh. “Purfresh Transport helps sustain and increase revenue from each shipment by maintaining fruit quality and provides an economical method to ship organic and conventional produce to worldwide destinations that were previously out of reach. Using Purfresh Transport, shippers can control expenses, reduce losses, and build buyer loyalty with fresher, safer, higher-quality produce.”
Scientifically engineered, Purfresh Transport delivers where traditional atmosphere management systems and antimicrobials fall short by providing the unparalleled combination of superior ripening control with 100% residue-free decay prevention and enhanced food safety. The industry’s only ozone-based, active cargo protection solution, Purfresh Transport constantly monitors the environment inside the reefer container throughout the voyage—providing the ability to ship even highly sensitive fruits and vegetables long distances.
As demonstrated in the series of studies and trials around the world, improvements in the quality of fresh produce utilizing the Purfresh Transport technology were significant:
· In trials with grapes, Purfresh’s active cargo protection technology outperformed standard sulfur dioxide (SO2) slow-release pads on long distance routes such as from Chile to the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, and from the United States to Australia and the United Kingdom.
· For Hass avocados, the results of a lab study—a 22-day simulated voyage—showed that Purfresh Transport maintained higher fruit pressure and higher weight as compared to regular atmosphere.
· Similar findings surfaced in a lab study with kiwifruit. After a 21-day simulated voyage, the findings demonstrated that with Purfresh Transport fruit pressure was maintained, there was zero incidence of mold spread or nesting, °Brix values remained stable, and ethylene levels were maintained at 10 parts per billion.
· In a commercial trial with pumpkins being shipped from New Zealand to the United Kingdom, Purfresh Transport received top rating by the shipper who noted the quality of the shipment was “… the best all season with only 1 bag out of 1280 bags showing any decay.”
· Direct customer feedback was also resounding when Purfresh Transport was utilized to ship mandarin oranges from Argentina to Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Russia, and the United Kingdom, and lemon shipments from New Zealand to the United States and the Netherlands. Shipments ranging from 22 to 49 days of travel showed minimal or no incidence of mold or bacteria.
These study results and customer success stories mirror those of previous global shipments of blueberries, stone fruit, and tropical fruit further demonstrating how Purfresh Transport can add value when shipping climacteric and non-climacteric—organic and conventional—produce.
Purfresh Transport is offered as a per-trip service from most major shipping lines and is optionally integrated with Intellipur®—a next-generation informatics service that offers unparalleled insight into the transportation segment of the food supply chain. Intellipur provides on-trip tracking, monitoring, alerting, and reporting enabling a previously unattainable level of insight into, and control over, the conditions of produce being shipped in refrigerated marine containers.
