Although food recalls have become increasingly common, a recall involving everything a company produces is unusual. A Washington state company called Estrella Family Creamery makes a number of cheese products and the FDA is warning consumers to avoid eating any of them. Not only does Estrella have a history of repeat FDA recalls, but this latest involves an August 2010 inspection of their farm which detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. It has been determined that all cheeses made by Estrella Family Creamery may have come into contact with Listeria.
Symptoms of Listeria include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, stiffness and diarrhea. Listeria is especially dangerous for pregnant women as it is known to cause miscarriage and stillbirth. Aside from pregnant women, children, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system is also at higher risk for developing complications due to Listeria. Consumers who have any questions or concerns about their health should seek the advice of a health care professional.
