Cheeses The Next Naming Rights Battleground

Tasmanian cheesemakers are considering plans by the European Union to prevent the use of names like camembert, brie and fetta, because of their geographical significance.

A new agreement between the EU and Australia means local wine producers will not be able to use names like burgundy, champagne and moselle to describe their wines.

Cheese may be the next product targetted by the EU, but Richmond cheesemaker Ashley McCoy says a lot of the names that may be protected have become generic terms.

"The big stand-out is cheddar cheese, and 80 per cent of the cheese in Australia is cheddar cheese, so if we can't call it cheddar, what do we call it?

"Even if we call it something else, if it looks like cheddar, it smells like cheddar, it tastes like cheddar, guess what, it's cheddar."
