USDA Rule Will Kill Jobs, Hurt Innovation

If the U.S. Department of Agriculture has anything to do it with it, agriculture producers could see the end of the free market as we know it.

A recent proposed rule by the USDA's Grain Inspection Packers and Stockyards Administration, or GIPSA, would allow the government, rather than market signals, to tell producers when and how they can market their cattle.

This rule has the potential to take the beef industry back 30 years by stifling the innovative efforts of U.S. cattle producers to add value and enhance the quality and safety of their products for consumers in the U.S. and abroad.

In cattle markets, our profitability is directly linked to our investments in genetic improvements and herd-management practices that allow us to produce high-quality cattle that can be sold for a premium through a marketing arrangement.
