Harris Teeter Drops Distribution Center Plans

Harris Teeter has decided not to develop a planned $101 million distribution center in King George County that would have brought about 335 jobs to the area.

The North Carolina-based grocer announced in January 2009 that it would build a 500,000-square-foot distribution center and grocery warehouse on 100 acres off State Route 3 in the King George Industrial Park. A weak economy led to project delays and numerous extensions on the land deal.

Yesterday, in response to a Free Lance-Star inquiry on the status of the project, Harris Teeter sent out a news release saying it had decided "not to pursue its option to develop the center."

"Prompted by a drop in fuel costs and the availability of affordable warehouse space in closer proximity to its existing distribution centers, Harris Teeter decided to earmark its capital toward other projects and not pursue the new distribution center," the company said in its statement.
