A federal lawsuit has been filed against SuperValu, the parent company of Jewel-Osco, by the developer of a proposed shopping center with a Super Walmart store in western Mundelein.
The lawsuit claims the supermarket chain engaged in a "dirty tricks" campaign to block the proposed Mundelein Walmart store.
The suit was filed on June 24 in U.S. District Court in Chicago by Rubloff Development Group, Inc., against Super Valu, Inc., doing business as Jewel-Osco, and Massachusetts-based Saint Consulting Group. The suit seeks in excess of $75,000 in damages.
Rubloff is the developer of the proposed Mundelein Town Center shopping center near Ivanhoe. In 2007, the village of Mundelein approved Rubloff's plans to build the 600,000-square-foot shopping center, which would have been anchored by a Super Walmart store and included several other major retailers such as Kohl's and Dick's Sporting Goods.
