Gulf Seafood Prices Soar

GULFPORT — The oil spill in the Gulf is driving up prices of shrimp, oysters and other seafood harvested there.

Local seafood merchants say the prices are up because they have to buy from alternative sources outside South Mississippi.

“It costs more to get the seafood here fresh,” said Sean Desporte of Desporte and Sons Seafood in Biloxi. “We were buying shrimp out of Louisiana, now they have that closed down so I am buying shrimp out of Alabama and Texas.”

But he says it’s getting harder to find product to sell.

Desporte said the everyday seafood shopper was stockpiling seafood and putting it in freezers before the oil hit the Coast.
