An Epicurean throwdown in Long Island City – the first of its kind in the U.S. – will crown the big cheese of the cheese world.
It will take six rounds of cheese tasting, cutting, wrapping and plating at the first-ever Cheesemonger Invitational Saturday.
Nine of the country's most accomplished pros will gather at a warehouse on 27th St. and go head-to-head in what cheese importer and event organizer Adam Moskowitz calls "a no-holds barred cornucopia of coddled curd."
The cheesemongers hail from some of the most famous cheese shops in the U.S. They will be judged by a panel of four industry bigwigs and compete for a modest prize of $500 and, more importantly, bragging rights.
"We live in a world of Iron Chef. They're going to battle it out," said Moskowitz, general manager of Larkin, a specialty food importing company where the battle (cheesemongerinvitational.com) will unfold.
"I wanted to spotlight specific skills of a cheesemonger," he said.
