Martin's Famous Potato Rolls Family Legacy

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Julie Martin, Martin's social media manager and 3rd generation Martin family member, released a blog post last week discussing the examples of her great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents that show how the incredible legacy of Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc. was established.

The story starts in the 1930s when Martin's great-grandparents, Laban and Ruth Wenger, established the culture of a strong work ethic in the family. Like many in the early 1930s, Ruth found work where she could, working as a cleaning lady for a wealthy family.  It was there that Ruth learned how to make cloverleaf potato rolls from a co-worker.  She knew that her great-aunt had a recipe for potato rolls, and she combined the two recipes into what has become the "famous" recipe that is the foundation of the Martin family baking business.

Lloyd Martin and Lois Martin are the founders of Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc.®.  Being young entrepreneurs they used their strong work ethic and the recipe perfected by Lois' mother, Ruth Wenger, with some slight alterations by Lois herself, to start a business out of their home.  It is evident that from the very beginning, the Martin family were innovators, always experimenting and trying to make things better; a culture of excellence that is proved through their high quality, fresh products and perseverance of excellent customer service.

James Martin, president, along with his wife, Donna, and their four children, own and operate Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc.®.  They carry out the legacy that was modeled and taught to them by generations that came before.  From Lloyd and Lois Martin baking pastries and rolls in their garage to sell at a local farmers' market, to becoming the number one branded hamburger bun in America (according to IRI sales data), to being used in restaurants worldwide, Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc.® is a true American Dream success story.  A story that was started and continued through values of family, hard work, great products, and community.
