The next time your cell phone jingles, it could be a message from a watermelon.
Thanks to modern farming and shipping methods, it's not unusual to find mangoes in January at your grocery store, or grapefruit in June. But many grocery shoppers might wonder which fruits and vegetables are actually in season.
Publix Super Markets answers those questions through its "At Season's Peak" program, which lets customers sign up for alerts by e-mail or text message telling them when fruits and vegetables are in their prime.
Publix launched the "At Season's Peak" program about four years ago, said Shannon Patten, a spokeswoman for the Lakeland-based grocery chain. Though she didn't offer statistics on how many customers have requested the alerts, Patten said, "We do have a large fan base."
