In recent years, value Tilapia has either fallen victim to fake news or been criticized for lower standards, both of which have been given as key reasons for a decline in consumption in the USA.
However, one company continues its mission to show that Responsible Aquaculture and Premium Tilapia standards can be one and the same thing.
Regal Springs, the largest Premium Tilapia producer in the world, has long been recognized for its pioneering approach for progressing Responsible Aquaculture standards which resulted in the business jointly achieving the accolade of being the world’s first Tilapia producer to be certified by ASC (in 2012) and BAP 4-star Certification for Tilapia (in 2016).
Francis Yupango, Regal Springs Head of Global Marketing said: “We have never rested on our ‘Tilapia Certification laurels’. We always place consumers at the heart of our thinking and have been steadily building positive perception around Premium Tilapia. We have invested in marketing, public relations and social media to state the facts about our Premium Tilapia.”
Last year, Regal Springs generated over 100 million media impressions, ranging from The Washington Post to PBS to PARADE Magazine and even The Hallmark Channel.

- Barton Seaver, chef, author and director of Sustainable Seafood and Health Initiative at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
- Kevin Fitzsimmons, environmental science professor at the University of Arizona and a leading expert on fish farming
“Within the last six months, we’ve seen a significant increase in positive consumer sentiment and have been reminded of the facts around Premium Tilapia and its positive nutritional benefits. And while we’re happy to see this shift in sentiment, we know there is always more to do,” says Yupangco.
National restaurant chains are reporting that consumers are responding positively to innovative Premium Tilapia menu concepts. For example, Red Lobster recently introduced three new Premium Tilapia dishes including Southwest Style Fish Tacos, Yucatan Tilapia and Shrimp and a new offer for Lobsterfest, Stuffed Tilapia with Langostino Lobster.

Retailers are recording an uptick in sales for Premium Tilapia. Traditional grocery chains and meal kit delivery services have also been increasing their efforts to reinforce Regal Springs Responsible Aquaculture practices while
HelloFresh and Blue Apron have both started offering branded Regal Springs Premium Tilapia as part of their meal kits.
“The Aquaculture industry as a whole is making incredible strides to produce responsibly farmed seafood protein and we’re proud to be a part of it,” says Yupangco. “Our marketing goal is to remind consumers that not all seafood is raised in the same way or to the same standards. We are passionate that people feel confident that they are getting nutritious, healthier and more sustainable seafood.”
