PEAKfresh USA Produce Bags Being Utilized By NASA

Lake Forest, Calif. – PEAKfresh USA today announces that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is utilizing PEAKfresh produce bags on its latest resupply mission via SpaceX CRS-14. The launch successfully took place Monday, April 2, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. EDT from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and will be delivering supplies and equipment to the International Space Station (ISS).

The PEAKfresh bags being used by NASA are the same produce bags available in local markets nationwide and online US retailers. Each bag measures 12” x 16” and is being used by NASA to store fruit and vegetables such as oranges, apples, carrots and tomatoes. Prior to launch, the produce was washed, air-dried, placed in PEAKfresh bags and then stored in the capsule. Once arriving at the ISS, the produce will remain in PEAKfresh bags until consumed by the astronauts.

PEAKfresh is Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) made specifically for produce. MAP products modify the composition of the air surrounding the packaged food in order to extend the initial fresh state of it. There are various types of MAP products with PEAKfresh being an ethylene extractor. The effectiveness of PEAKfresh comes from a natural occurring mineral that extracts ethylene gas – the agent that causes produce to ripen and ultimately spoil. By reducing ethylene gas, PEAKfresh extends the freshness and life of produce for up to 2 – 3 times normal shelf life.

“PEAKfresh has a long history of successfully helping produce growers, shippers, and retailers in preserving their produce from harvest, to storage, during transit and at store level,” said Greg Ganzerla, President and CEO of PEAKfresh USA. “The 12” x 16” home-use bag is our latest offering and we’ve experienced tremendous reception from consumers. I am honored that NASA is using PEAKfresh at the ISS and am confident that it will provide the shelf life extension they need. Furthermore, because we proudly manufacture our product in the United States, it is especially meaningful that a US Federal Agency like NASA is using it.”
