Publix To Move Into Carolinas, Take On Harris Teeter

Publix Super Markets Inc. will make a long-expected move into the Charlotte, N.C., region this year and take on an entrenched grocer for market share.
The Lakeland-based supermarket chain plans to open two new stores in South Carolina towns that are considered suburbs of the Charlotte metro area.
In moving farther into the state — where the chain already operates 45 stores — Publix will challenge Harris Teeter, a 200-plus store grocery chain with more than $4 billion in annual sales that is headquartered in Matthews, N.C.
Harris Teeter holds roughly one quarter of the Charlotte grocery market share, a field also dominated by Walmart, Food Lion and discounter Aldi. Harris Teeter is considered the most prominent traditional supermarket, though, and the competitor Publix will most likely go after directly.
