The consumers’ demands for fair, reliable and sustainably produced flowers and plants continue to increase. Retailers, including the major international supermarkets, garden centres, DIY stores and e-commerce companies, keep imposing more sustainability requirements on growers. How can you respond to these demands?
Sustainability in the horticultural sector is essential to be able to continue producing and trading flowers and plants in a responsible manner. That is why the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) was established.
What is FSI?
FSI is the leading initiative for making the international horticultural chain more sustainable and has a concrete objective: in 2020, 90% of the flowers and plants produced and sold by the members will be sustainable. Dutch Flower Group, FleuraMetz, Royal Lemkes, Waterdrinker and Royal FloraHolland signed a manifesto to stimulate FSI. According to the signatories, the horticultural sector will have no future without sustainable products, and the Dutch sector is obliged to take the initiative as a global player in the trade and production of flowers and plants.
