Indiana Kroger Earns EPA Certification

It's not just the lettuce and spinach that are green in grocery stores.

From freezer cases that light up only when a customer walks by to concrete polished floors that don't require chemicals to clean, environmentally friendly, energy-efficient design is sweeping the supermarket industry nationwide.

One of the best examples, perhaps, is in Indianapolis at the Nora Kroger store, which recently became the first grocery store in the nation to earn the Energy Star certification from the Environmental Protection Agency for building design.

Eight other Kroger stores in Indianapolis have applied for the certification, which designates buildings that are environmentally designed to perform in the top 25 percent of all buildings in the United States.
