The union representing Moose Jaw Pork Packers will be in an interesting position of likely negotiating a collective agreement for a facility with no employees.
“That’s pretty different when there are no employees,” Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Saskatchewan secretary-treasurer Garry Burkart told the Times-Herald on Wednesday. He said the plant’s new owners and the union could reach a memorandum agreement though. Once employees start work, they could ratify the agreement at that time.
Although it still requires ratification at an upcoming regular council meeting, during Monday’s executive committee meeting, a majority of councillors and the mayor approved the sale of the plant, of which the city took possession at the end of March.
