CVS Caremark Corp., the largest U.S. provider of prescription drugs, will expand its grocery section, adding fresh salads and sandwiches at urban stores to meet consumer demand and increase sales of non-pharmacy items.
CVS joins retailers such as Walgreen Co., the largest U.S. drugstore chain, mass merchandisers Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and Kroger Co. and Safeway Inc. supermarkets in providing ready-to-eat meals to meet consumer demand.
CVS, which has more than 7,000 retail locations (including more than 30 in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky), is using data collected from its loyalty-card program to change its product mix in urban areas, where consumers shop the stores for everyday items, CVS Chief Financial Officer Dave Denton, 44, said in an interview. The exact product assortment is still evolving, he said.
