Nogales, AZ — On the weekend of October 7 & 8, 2017, The Fresh Produce Association of the Americas will be hosting a clinic with the Tomateros de Culiacan where local children and youth will have the opportunity to receive coaching from the Pros. The clinic, which is at the War Memorial Baseball Stadium in Nogales, takes place between 10am-3pm on both days and will include lunch.
The Tomateros have expressed their excitement to share their knowledge and love of the sport with the community. “For the Tomateros Club, an important objective is to develop and nurture tomorrow’s players and as such, it is this organization’s great satisfaction to participate in this event. It is with gratitude that we bring our coaches and players to share their knowledge and experience with the Nogales youth who share our passion for baseball, a magnificent sport,” Hector Ley Lopez, Executive President of the Tomateros Club, said regarding the upcoming event. “It is our hope too, that with the initiative of the FPAA, produce companies, and the Nogales community in general both our cities, Nogales and Culiacan, can strengthen our affiliation.”
The Tomateros are a professional baseball team out of Sinaloa, Mexico with ties to the fresh produce industry. In fact, the team is owned by the Ley Family, which also operates Del Campo Supreme in Nogales. The team is based out of Culiacan, which is right at center of the Mexican produce industry. Tomateros, which means “Tomato Picker”, was chosen as the team name because of the role Culiacan plays in the fresh produce import industry. The clinic is in part, a gesture to strengthen the bond between Culiacan and Nogales, where produce coming in from Mexico is received, processed and distributed. The event will also serve to promote the powerful economic and cultural ties between the United States and Mexico.
"Baseball is a big part of the fabric of the community for both Nogales and Culiacan, and so is fresh produce,” says Lance Jungmeyer, FPAA President. “We think this is a great way to show the love that is inherent between our cities. And maybe the Tomateros can help Nogales bring home another title in baseball."
