Many grocery store chains have gone bankrupt, been acquired by a competitor, or closed all together, only to have their storefronts scooped up and redeveloped. But a number of chains have survived the fate that has played out throughout New Jersey and the nation.
As the shopping landscape changes, it's making room for ethnic and specialty supermarkets to grow. It has also allowed for some chains that already had a significant footprint in New Jersey to thrive and expand. And that development doesn't seem to be slowing anytime soon, with several large supermarket chains eyeing property here.
These are the supermarkets with the greatest number of stores in New Jersey and the other chains hoping to compete.
