Flat sales and more competition in the supermarket industry has driven Brennan's Market, a Madison area specialty grocer with five locations, to close all its stores this September.
The 75-year-old company said in a news release that the growth of competition and new options for consumers has made the business model for Brennan's Market "unsustainable." As a result, the firm will close its five retail locations, in Brookfield, Monroe, Oconomowoc and two in Madison, on Sept. 30. Brennan's New Glarus warehouse packaging facility — where the firm packages and distributes its own brand of cheese — will also close Sept. 30.
The Brookfield store, 19000 W. Blue Mound Road, has been sold and will be converted to a new use, said Brennan's spokesman Wayne Glowac, but there are no firm plans for the other four locations and warehouse.
