CHICAGO – Accounting for nearly 45% of total sales, Technomic Inc.'s Power 50 broadliners are a critical bellwether of the distributor marketplace. As the larger foodservice industry began to see signs of a relative slowdown in 2016, many Power 50 broadliners also felt the downstream effects with the group seeing overall sales growth of 3.1%. There were still numerous success stories to be found however, as thirteen companies within the ranking saw 2016 sales growth of 5% or greater with three seeing double-digit growth: Scavuzzo's Inc., Jake's Finer Foods and McDonald Wholesale Co.
Similar to the distribution marketplace as a whole, the Power 50 ranking is top-heavy with the three largest companies, Sysco, US Foods and Performance Food Group, accounting for over 60% of the group's 2016 sales volume. Annual results for the top three broadliners were mixed, with Performance Food Group seeing 5.5% sales growth in 2016, followed by Sysco at 4.1%, while US Foods noted a sales decrease of 0.9%. Cumulatively, the top three companies experienced 2.9% sales growth, a notable drop from 2015's rate of 5.5%.
"As new sources of competition arise and regulatory issues and industry saturation continue to weigh heavily on distributors, we expect the marketplace to remain a challenging environment in the near-term," writes David Henkes, senior principal at Technomic. "To find success, distributors will need to balance smart technology investments with maintaining a human touch through meaningful and consultative customer partnerships."
