Wild oyster fishermen aren't paid enough for their product, so fewer and fewer are taking to the water, the P.E.I. Shellfish Association says.
"The day when I first started fishing, you could walk on the dories out there 15 years ago," association president Clifford Bernard told CBC News on Tuesday while looking out over Bedeque Bay, east of Summerside.
"Last spring out here, there were [only] 25 dories. Where'd they go?"
Bernard said many left because it is getting too difficult to make a living on oysters. He doesn't expect there to be more than 25 dories on the water this Saturday when the 2010 season opens.
