Wisconsin Cheeses Prolific In Record Entries For US Championship Cheese Contest

March Madness also includes cheese.

And when the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest begins March 7 in the atrium at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, it will feature a record number of entries, nearly half of them from Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association, host of the event, announced Wednesday that registrations for the nation’s largest technical cheese, butter and yogurt competition have increased 22 percent from 2015 to 2,303 entries from 33 states. The 1,134 entries from Wisconsin cheesemakers represent 49 percent of the total, the association reported.

The contest is held on alternating years opposite the World Championship Cheese Contest, last held in March 2016 in Madison. The event ended with a smear ripened hard cheese produced in Monroe by Fitchburg-based Emmi Roth USA being named best in show out of 2,955 entries.
