Bedford – The Pennsylvania Beef Council (PBC), in partnership with the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, helped spice things up at the 101st Pennsylvania Farm Show, January 7-14, in Harrisburg.
Event goers had the opportunity to mix their own “Farm Fresh Beef Rub.” Back by popular demand the hands-on spice bar allowed for consumers to engage in beef dialog while putting together their own spice packet to enjoy on their favorite cut of beef at home. In addition, guests were welcomed into the Beef Booth to meet “Bubba.” The “Smile and Say BEEF” selfie station featured a large, inflatable steer which was a true crowd pleaser to beef fans of all ages. Checkoff staff engaged with event goers to beef-up their knowledge about beef and veal production, nutrition and cookery throughout the week.
“We always enjoy connecting with consumers at the Pennsylvania Farm Show,” noted Bridget Bingham, the Beef Council’s Executive Director. “Coming together as an agricultural community to tell our story in our own words has never been more important. The Farm Show is the perfect platform to interact with thousands of consumers over the duration of the event and is extremely rewarding for our staff and the producers we represent.”
The 2017 PA Preferred Blue Ribbon Reception was held on Friday, January 6, which helped kick-off the Farm Show week. The reception attracted nearly 650 guests. Garlic Espagnole Braised Beef Short Rib and veal meatballs were two of the delicious commodity dishes featured. The veal product was graciously provided by Mountain States Rosen.
Festivities continued throughout week with beef and veal taking center stage on Wednesday, January 11. Beef & Veal Day, sponsored by PBC, featured an array of cooking demonstrations on the PA Preferred™ Culinary Cooking Demonstration Stage, from 11a.m.-6 p.m. located in the Main Hall. Over the course of the day, 1,200 samples of beef and veal were handed out. Rick Fetrow, Senior Field Sales Consultant, Tyson Foods, Inc., in partnership with the PBC, presented hot beef and veal sundaes. Rick was joined on the stage with Darwin Nissley, PBC Chair and Lancaster County feedlot producer, as well as Robert Supancik, PBC Board member and veal representative. The beef and veal sundae samples proved to be a hit with the crowd. During the cooking demonstration, the two livestock producers took the opportunity to educate the crowd about their commitment to raising safe, wholesome and nutritious beef and veal for consumers to enjoy.
