On July 6th, 2016, the Oregon Humane Society removed 245 birds from a Damascus, Oregon property in the largest animal rescue in Oregon’s history. The birds had been warehoused in dangerously unhealthy conditions. Many suffered from malnutrition, dehydration, lost feathers and damaged skin. They were transported to an emergency animal shelter for extensive treatment and rehabilitation.
Nutrition would play a large role in the rescue. Birds are more susceptible than humans to insecticides and pesticides used in conventional crops, so OHS reached out to United Salad Co. for help. The company agreed to have enough organic produce delivered twice a week to feed 245 birds, including plenty of their favorites: organic bananas, broccoli, and bell peppers.
Organic foods are higher in nutritional content, which would help the rescued birds regain their health. "We are so grateful to United Salad Co. for their donation of organic fruit and vegetables for these rescued birds,” said Barbara Baugnon, the Oregon Humane Society Marketing Communications Director.
In six months, the birds underwent a remarkable transformation. They regrew their lost skin and feathers. Volunteers trimmed their nails and beaks, and worked on training and socialization. Roomy cages and a variety of perches and toys added to the birds’ overall wellbeing.
“United Salad Co. was happy to extend the benefits of our organic produce to this rescue work,” said (Vice President, Ernie Spada, III). “We are proud to see what proper nutrition has done for the birds.”
Every one of the African gray parrots, macaws, cockatoos, conures, ring neck doves, pigeons, Amazon parrots, finches and parakeets survived and thrived. Their former owner has relinquished ownership while facing felony animal neglect charges.
As of year-end, 2016, all 245 birds have been placed in adoptive homes.
