On 23 November 2016, the Commission adopted a Decision on the placing on the market of a GM cut flower (carnation line SHD-27531-4). The Decision covers the placing on the market of this GMO for ornamental purposes only and excludes cultivation. The genetic modification is for a specific flower colour.
This GM carnation has gone through the authorisation procedure under part C of Directive 2001/18, including favourable scientific assessments by the competent authority of The Netherlands and EFSA. Member States could not reach an opinion in both the Standing and Appeal Committees and the Commission decided to adopt this decision.
The consent will be granted for 10 years, and the cut flowers will be subject to the EU's strict labelling and traceability rules.
