A Delaware-based poultry processing company that in May announced plans to re-open and potentially expand the former Townsend chicken processing plant in Siler City has been approved for a local incentive package worth about $2.3 million over the next six years.
Mountaire Farms plans to begin renovations soon to the facility, as well as a nearby former Kellwood building that will be turned into a new feed mill, plus the expansion of a hatchery it purchased in Mt. Vernon in 2013.
The entire project is expected to bring 714 jobs with an average annual wage of $28,000 and a capital investment of $70.8 million. The new jobs number received a healthy boost over what company officials initially planned in May, which was to hire about 500.
