Canby, Ore. – Terra Nova Nurseries announced today a sneak peek of two new varieties: Coleus TERRA NOVA® ‘Magic Spell’ and Coleus TERRA NOVA® ‘Maharaja’. These varieties are the newest additions to the company’s TERRA NOVA® Collection.
Pushing the genetic envelope, the TERRA NOVA Collection offers brilliant breeding breakthroughs of color and form. The collection’s coleus varieties are well-branched, excellent replacements for impatiens, and they have hardiness zones of 10-11. PGRs are neither required, nor recommended.
The new Coleus TERRA NOVA ‘Magic Spell’ is a multi-colored plant, with petite, fuchsia-to-cream centered leaves with green edges. It has been bred to have a small, trailer-mounding habit, with a foliage height of 10” and foliage spread of 24”.
Coleus TERRA NOVA ‘Maharaja’ is a vigorous spreading plant with deep, oxblood-burgundy leaves with gold edges. Its foliage height of 12”, foliage spread of 30” and small, trailing habit make it ideal for many uses in the garden and landscape.
These self-branching varieties have a fast growth rate, and a 4” pot will finish in three to four weeks. Landscape values include use as a ground cover and in hanging baskets, mixed containers, mass beds, and summer borders. They also serve well as colorful houseplants. These varieties are well-suited for regions with heat and humidity such as the Deep South, and they thrive in shade to part shade. Well-drained soil with moderate organic content is required.
Terra Nova Nurseries has created a “Plant Profile” page and “Grower Recipe” specific to each of these new varieties so growers can learn more about growing habits, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team.
