A Washington company is recalling Mexican-style cheese that could be contaminated with listeria.
The recall, which was triggered by an illness, covers all Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese made by Del Bueno of Grandview, WA, sold in Oregon and Washington.
The company distributed a limited quantity of the cheese to outlets in Hermiston and the Milton Freewater area, said Joe Graham, a senior food safety inspector in the Washington Department of Health.
One person who ate the cheese was sickened by listeria in Washington, he said. Officials later found the bacteria in samples of the cheese.
The recall, which is ongoing, covers cheese with code dates up to and including May 30, 2010.
Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail and elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. It poses a particular risk to pregnant women, who can have miscarriages.
