Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program Awards College Scholarships

PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program has announced the winners of its 2016 Dairy Science Scholarship and Food Marketing Scholarship, awarded to students attending Delaware Valley University and Saint Joseph’s University, respectively.

Emma Munyan of Elizabethtown, Pa., is the recipient of the Dairy Science Scholarship. A junior at Delaware Valley University, Munyan is majoring in large animal science. She is involved in the Dairy Society, the Block and Bridle club and is a sister of the Sigma Alpha professional agricultural sorority.

After graduation, Munyan plans to attend veterinary school. She says it’s important to continue to tell dairy’s story to young, non-farm kids because “educated children become educated adults, and educated adults make decisions to support crucial parts of agriculture.”

Taylor Martin of Lansdale, Pa., received the Food Marketing Scholarship. A junior at Saint Joseph’s University, Martin is majoring in food marketing and is a member of the SJU Food Marketing Association and the American Marketing Association. While interning with the Campbell Soup Company this summer, she met with the research and development manager to discuss the role dairy plays within the company.

Of her internship, Martin says she recognizes the value of milk as a raw material and an “undeniable ingredient” in Campbell’s recipes. She learned from others within the company “the importance of maintaining healthy relationships with dairy farmers.”

Munyan and Martin each received $1,500 toward their college studies.

“We are pleased to award these scholarships to help support students interested in pursuing dairy-related and/or food science careers that support the dairy industry,” said Jeff Raney, chairman of the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program board of directors. “This is a worthwhile investment in helping to prepare the dairy and food industry leaders of the future.”
