SACRAMENTO, Calif. – General Produce, a leading family-owned and operated produce distributor, is gearing up for Farm Tank 2016 in Sacramento, an inaugural food conference event in conjunction with Farm-to-Fork and Food Tank. This conference will offer attendees opportunities to learn about the unique perspective of California food and agriculture and help to find their voice in food policy matters and the food system challenges.
“We will be participating in the food summit in a couple of exciting ways”, said Linda Luka, Director of Marketing and Communications for General Produce. “Over the course of two and a half days (September 21st-23rd), the individual conference tracks will provide an exhilarating experience that will advance the conversation around access to healthy food. What transpires could potentially improve our local food system”.
Industry leaders, educators, farmers, writers, nonprofits and policy makers will engage in one of many customized programs that include Ag & Environmental Conservation, Youth Engagement, Urban Farms, Farmer for a Day and Hubs and Innovation.
On day one of the Food Tank Summit, Tom Chan, CEO of General Produce, will participate in a paneled discussion around the topic of “infrastructure”. “As a food hub, we’re a bridge between food producers and the end consumer”, says Chan. “Our paramount role as a produce distributor is to provide access to safe, healthy, local and regional foods to communities near and far”.
Day two is devoted to behind-the-scenes, off-site excursions. “General Produce will host a facility tour and partner event for the hubs and innovation track”, said Luka. “What better way to showcase agriculture in action than to include some of our incredible local growers and community partners? We will set up a farmers’ market style event so attendees can hear directly from those responsible for providing the wonderful California grown products to consumers. Our partners will be available to discuss food access, sustainable practices, food safety, technology, food recovery, and much more. These are the relationships that build and promote healthy eating for all. We are honored to facilitate this event and join forces with Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services and other committed healthy food advocates”.
