Real Kobe, Fake Kobe: How To Enjoy The World’s Most Famous Beef

Japan’s Kobe beef is the Rolls-Royce of red meat, the world’s most famously luxurious steak. It’s also the world’s most counterfeited beef, and odds are that if you ate it in this country, even if you paid hundreds of dollars for a single small steak, you were duped.

The good news is that real Kobe beef, produced only in the region around Kobe City in Japan’s Hyogo prefecture, is more widely available than ever before, so if you want to try it, now is the time. The USDA has already totally banned the import of Japanese beef twice since 2000, and for most of the 21st century, 100% of restaurant claims of Kobe or any Japanese wagyu beef have been boldfaced lies. You never know when it might be banned again, so if you love red meat, this is a great time to taste it.
