Giant Eagle Becomes First Supermarket In Pennsylvania To Start Selling Wine

Get ready to pop some corks.

Starting Friday, Giant Eagle will begin selling wine at its Market District store at Settlers Ridge in Robinson — the first supermarket to sell wine in Pennsylvania since before Prohibition.

The O’Hara-based grocer will mark the occasion with a ceremonial champagne toast at the store Friday morning attended by Giant Eagle officials and House Speaker Mike Turzai, R-Marshall, primary sponsor of a wine privatization bill signed into law in June.

The new law allows businesses holding restaurant or hotel liquor licenses to sell up to three liters of wine to go per customer. Some 10,000 businesses hold restaurant liquor licenses in the state, including about 300 grocery and convenience stores currently allowed to sell beer.
