Lousy Georgia Brown Shrimp Season Follows Bountiful White Shrimp Harvest

You could read the day’s catch across the weathered face of shrimper Bobby Ray Bennett, who stood at the bow of the Dora F around noon Friday as it sidled into the only empty berth at the City Market docks on Brunswick’s East River.

The durable old boat was not the last one in from the day’s shrimping along the Golden Isles’ coast. It was the only boat that even bothered to go out in what is supposed to be the height of Georgia’s brown shrimp season. The look on Bennett’s face suggested they should not have bothered.

“Poorly, poorly, poorly,” he said, in answer to someone at the dock who asked anyway. “Yeah, it was bad. It ain’t nothing like it should’ve been.”
