A fourth-generation greenhouse grower, Paul Mastronardi sees a future full of expansion opportunities for one of the region’s largest sectors.
But whether that growth takes place in Essex County or across the border depends on how quickly Ontario addresses long-standing industry complaints about soaring hydro rates and availability of electricity and natural gas, Mastronardi said.
“We are growing between 30 and 50 acres a year,” said the 42-year-old president and CEO of Kingsville-based SUNSET Produce. “We’d like to expand in Canada if the economics are right. If not, we’ll be looking at other places in the U.S.
