Big Y Buying Eight Mass. Hannaford Stores Including Norwell, Kingston And Easton

The Big Y will buy eight Hannaford Supermarkets in Massachusetts, including the Norwell store, following the Federal Trade Commission’s approval of a merger between two large supermarket companies, Delhaize Group and Ahold.

Michael Norton, director of external communication and community relations for Hannaford Supermarkets, said the Federal Trade Commission requires the companies to sell a percentage of their stores in order to ensure fair competition on the market.

The companies will sell 86 stores in the country, 4.1 percent the companies' combined stores, to well-established supermarket chains. The eight stores being sold in Massachusetts are the Hannaford markets in Norwell, Kingston, Easton, West Peabody, Saugus, North Quincy, Norwood and Milford.
