Ecuador Exported 233 Tons Of Flowers To China In 2015

SHANGHAI – Ecuador exported a total of 233 tons of flowers (valued at $3.2 million), 21.9 percent more in volume than in 2014, to China in 2015 thanks to a boom in online sales.

The commercial office of ProEcuador in Shanghai told EFE, the South American country was for the second time the world’s largest exporter of fresh flowers to China, mostly roses, one of its star products.

In Shanghai and Beijing there are already sellers who import a variety of Ecuadorean roses but in recent months through virtual stores on online shopping platforms, including TMall.com (part of the Alibaba group) and its main rival in the country, JD.com, these importers have been able to reach more buyers and boost sales through online promotions, including a Christmas campaign by Tmall importers and another ongoing one by JD.com for the Chinese Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day.
