New Seasons Brings Grocery War To Seattle's Fast-Growing Ballard

A fast-growing Portland grocer on Friday announced plans to open a store in a new retail center in Seattle's fast-growing Ballard neighborhood.

New Seasons Market, which sells locally grown food, says it will open the store at 907 N.W. Ballard Way in the fall of 2017. This will bring three grocery stores to a three-block area. New Seasons will join Traders Joe's and Fred Meyer, a division of Kroger (NYSE: KR). In addition, Safeway, QFC and the Ballard Market operate in the neighborhood, where people also can shop at a farmers' market on Sundays.

This will be New Seasons' second store in the Puget Sound region. The company plans to open a store on Mercer Island this fall. More store openings also are planned this year and next — one in Portland and two in the Bay Area.
