It's known as Usinger's Famous Sausage, but the farther away from Milwaukee you get, the less famous it is.
That's one reason the Milwaukee company looks forward each year to the holiday gift box season. It's an opportunity for Usinger's, with the help of local fans, to gets its products onto the taste buds of consumers around the nation, and hopefully win over some new devotees.
"Because we're a relatively small manufacturer, we don't have distribution all over the country. We have little pockets of business everywhere, but you really have to look for it in most markets," said Jon Gabe, vice president of sales and marketing at Usinger's. "So if somebody gets a gift box from a friend or relative in Milwaukee and they really like it, they'll either go to their local grocer and ask if that guy can order it or they'll become a catalog or online customer. It's a great sampling program for us, and it shows off what we can do."
